GARDENING THEN AND NOW
It was whilst cutting the hedge that I began to wonder just how gardeners had performed this task in centuries past. The quest to find out produced this fully illustrated talk which takes a number of basic gardening tasks and observes their history. Not only that but we look as far into the future as possible studying very modern bits of equipment and futuristic techniques.
This is one of my favourite talks because it features a large number of early manuscripts and fascinating illustrations which show that nothing is really new under the sun. The earliest illustration of a proper garden I have been able to find was in Egypt 1300 years BC, so gardening has been around for some time! And then there is the digging tool of a type used in the fourteenth century which I recently came across in a gardening magazine being advertised as "new"!
Just two of the intriguing facts I unearthed whilst putting this talk together.
